About Charter Schools
What is a charter school?
A charter school is a public school that receives public funds under a written agreement—a charter—that outlines student performance goals and educational services the public charter school will provide.
In the Gresham-Barlow School District, board policy states public charter schools should demonstrate a commitment to the mission and diversity of public education, while adhering to one or more goals as outlined in policy LBE, Public Charter Schools.
These goals include:
- Increase student learning and achievement
- Increasing the number of learning opportunities for students
- Better meet individual student academic needs and interests
- Encouraging the use of different and innovative learning methods
